Swiftwater Cellars Winery is a landmark in Cle Elum, WA. Back in 1977, Don and Lori Watts built this winery from scratch. The business now features over 20,000 acres of farmland, and the family employs over 500 people.
Even though the winery has grown tremendously over the years, the owners still strive to provide visitors and customers with the best-tasting wine in the state.
No. 9 Family of Wines
No. 9 is the property wine of Swiftwater Cellars, but few patrons know the history of this delicate blend. The Cle Elum, WA area was once a mining town. Even as you travel through the city today, you’ll see remnants from this period. The winery stays true to the city’s past with its famous No. 9 brand of wines.
The Watts family named their wine after the Roslyn No. 9 mine, which was in use back in 1930. The mine was in operation for over three decades and became the last running coal mine until it closed for good in 1963. You’ll find artifacts from the mining days throughout the winery, including pickaxes on the walls and a cocktail named after miners.
The entrance to the No. 9 mine is on Swiftwater Cellars property, near the forecourt. It’s possible to see this entrance if you look across from Tipple Hill. Since the area was founded due to the hard work of local miners, it only makes sense to honor their efforts with a glass of No. 9 wine.
